  • 3/8 and 6/8 Time Signatures

Up to now all of our Time Signatures have been /4. (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, etc.)

The bottom number (/4) tells us what kind of note gets 1 beat. (1/4=quarter note )

However, there are other Time Signatures which are /8.

A Time Signature of 3/8 means there are 3 beats in a measure and an 8th () note gets 1 beat.

A Time Signature of 6/8 means that there are 6 beats in a measure and an 8th () note gets 1 beat.

Counting In "One", "Two" and "CutTime"

Sometimes when the "meter" (speed) of a piece is very fast the conductor cannot conduct every beat.

3/8 Time is sometimes counted and conducted in "One."

This means that each measure will have one beat and each beat is divided into three parts.
6/8 Time is sometimes counted and conducted in "Two."

This means that each measure will have two beats and each beat is divided into three parts.
4/4 Time is sometimes counted and conducted in "CutTime."

This means that each measure will have two beats and each beat is divided into two or more parts.
