Unit 10

The Order of Flats

Flats are the opposite of Sharps. Therefore the order of flats (b) is;

B, E, A, D, G, C, F

This means that if a Key Signature has 1 flat that flat will be Bb;

if it has 2 flats they will be Bb and Eb;

if it has 3 flats they will be Bb, Eb, and Ab, etc., etc.

Don't forget that the Key of C has no sharps or flats.

The Key Signature Chart For Flats

Using our two memorized facts (The order of flats and the Key of C has no sharps or flats.)

we can create a Chart which will tell us the Key Signature for Keys which use flats.

STEP 1: Write the order of flats. (NB. that they are all b except for C and F.)

STEP 2: Since the Key of C has no sharps or flats write 0 under the C and then number from 1-6.

When you get to the end of the line go back to the beginning.
